Projects Duga-3
Duga-3 is a photographic exploration of the colossal Soviet-era radar system located near Chernobyl, Ukraine. Constructed in the 1970s, this over-the-horizon radar—nicknamed the “Russian Woodpecker” for its distinctive tapping signal—was designed for early missile detection, its transmissions disrupting global radio frequencies. Peter Franc’s images isolate the immense, rusting lattice structures against the desolate landscape, transforming them into abstract forms that evoke both the scale of Cold War ambition and the erosion of time. The series captures a haunting intersection of technological might and natural reclamation, offering a visual meditation on obsolescence and the passage of history.
